end of the month book club

So, I may or may not have blogged about how I wanted to join some book clubs!?
Online book clubs that is. I clicked on some groups on facebook, sent out a few emails and... NADA
Apparently no one wants to include a little old reignited book worm from Perth in their book-reading adventures... so I say screw it. I will make my own.

Not super literally, I will just read whatever I want, so since I only started reading again (I got two in (hey - not bad) lol

Here we go.

We Need To Talk About Kevin - Lionel Shriver

Can I just say... wow. What an emotional ride. It made me not want to have kids (not really but kinda) but it was just so powerful and moving. The main protagonist, Eva, retells the story of her life, marriage and family through letters to her husband, Franklin. This may not sound very exceptional except throughout these letters she reveals an honest and emotionally charged account of her struggles with her first-born child, Kevin and her seemingly lack of mothering instincts and emotions. Oh, did I mention that Kevin is a socialpath and is responsible for a high school massacre? Don't worry, that isn't a spoiler, it's even on the blurb :)
Her letters deal with life after the massacre, visits to Kevin at his prison and her life leading up to "Thursday" and the tatters of her life which remain after.

I loved it. It took me a long time to read, sometimes I would literally read to myself out loud in order to grasp the structure and sentences better, they are a tinsy-bit too descriptive for my liking but they wonderfully written. I haven't seen the movie yet but it is on my to do list!

Lucky - Alice Sebold

It seem's like I've had a depressing few weeks since the next book I picked up was a memoir based around the rape of Alice Sebold (author of The Lovely Bones) when she was in college and her fight to bring her assailant to justice. I enjoy Sebold's writing, I really loved the Lovely Bones and just like this one, I read it in one sitting. It is such an honest account of such a horrific situation and her struggle and strength going forward with her life and battling the mind field of relationships afterwards is truly remarkable. They say when big events happen, it's like putting a bookmark in your life that splits it into "Before" and "After" and I think this book really proves that theory. It didn't make it onto my favourite's list but it's still worth a read. If only to have an honest look into the mind of someone who has overcome their darkest days and made it out alive.

That's it for now. I have a few more ripe and ready to get into for May.

Is anyone out there doing some reading as well?

sunday: weekend diary

wow, what a weekend, firstly because it was extra long weekend (Thu-Sun)
oh & also ANZAC Day

if you are keen (& even if you aren't, I'm going to give you a play-by-play)

WEDNESDAY
Night
I'm adding this into my weekend as it technically was the start of it and more to the point, I actually did something with it.
I went out to the casino (Perth only has one) with a large group of friends.
It was awesome to have so many of us together, it was a bit shocking to realise how rare these occasions were. We all had cocktails and dinner at Junction Grill.
I have to admit, I filled up on cocktails and my delicious salad was wasted on me. :(
I went home with my best friend Dave where we proceeded to laze off our food or uh, cocktail bellies re-watching the first season of Adventure Time.

THURSDAY
ANZAC Day
I watched the dawn service from the comfort of my bedroom (I know, very unpatriotic) but when I did get up, I made ANZAC cookies - all by myself!
Wow, I sound like a child and even though I enjoy cooking / baking. I still have this looming feeling like I completely suck at it. Sometimes I get all anxious if I have used a lot of ingredients / food because if I screw up the recipe - I'll be wasting food, time and money.
Anyway, the cookies turned out okay, not great, but definitely edible.
I went op shopping with my mum during the day and picked up some books (don't I always).
Thursday night I took a short road trip with my best friend Amy and my old friend Ross. It turned out to be quite an eventful (and uneventful) night.
The whole point of the journey was to go star gazing in York (about an hour out of Perth) but alas the skies were not on our side & decided to mask itself in cloud... oh also it was a full moon (one hand: awesome, other hand: no stars whatsoever)
We drove back to Perth via Amy's house in the hills, then down to mine... where I discovered I didn't have my keys on me. Awkward.
Had to call my mum's work & we drove 25 mins to pick up the key, then back to mine, where we all had a shot of whisky & then fell asleep to The Butterfly Effect (the film, not the band - both are awesome though :P)

FRIDAY
A well deserved sleep in with Amy. Who then promptly discovered her car was not starting.
Major bummer. Luckily her father works in the same suburb and swung by to collect her when he finished work. Dave came over after he had finished work and we did some shopping and lazed about - which is pretty much all we do. He left me to my own devices - aka. finishing "We Need To Talk About Kevin" (the book, not the movie - will talk more about that tomorrow) & listening to Pink Floyd.

SATURDAY
Rob, the boyfriend, came over to take me to Nexus Fair (a quarterly toy & collectors fair which we always go to) - I love it. It can always drain my bank account.
This time, I got a big bargain (in my eyes).
I love Pokemon. A lot.
My favourite Pokemon are Poliwhirl, Skitty, Caterpie & you know what I'm going to stop here.
Anyway, I've been toying with buying a decent size (hugable size) Poliwhirl plush for a long time.
On ebay (pretty much the only place to find them) they can go from $18-45 PLUS postage.
I picked up one from Nexus for $5.
Five dollars! I almost had a fit when I saw him. As soon as I saw it, Rob knew. He told me to calm myself but my penchant for getting crazy excited for things that don't necessarily deserve such a high level excitement is widely known amongst my social circles.
I care not. I picked up my Poliwhirl on the cheap and two more baby Poliwhirls (one was an ex-Hungry Jack/Burger King toy & converts from a Poliwag into a Poliwhirl and the other is identical to the one I had as a little girl - I believe it used to have candy in it's little velcro pouch on the back - both picked up for $2 ea)
I already have one that converts from Pokeball to Poliwhirl. I just couldn't believe my luck.
I also picked up some Hotwheels cars (Red Baron - one from my childhood) and some Catwoman comics.

After Nexus we picked up my mum and we all drove to IKEA (that place is a real drain on the bank account - but I decided to be good and only buy some DVD Boxes & Magazine Holders)
I still have to buy a bunch of furniture - might make another trip this weekend.
My mum bought a big ass TV Unit for our pending new TV
I was then whisked up to the hills so Rob and our friend Lee could have a music jam.
I sat on the couch and read "Lucky" by Alice Sebold (again  more on this tomorrow)

Rob and I left to go back to his house where we cuddled up to watch "Zombieland" for the millionth time.
It's still such an enjoyable movie.
We eventually went back to mine, where he dropped me off and went to the city to meet with some of his muso friends. Leaving me to my own devices, it wasn't long before he came back just to put me to bed.

SUNDAY
I woke up and my head had switched back to fitness mode.
Maybe it was the internet (it really is my #1 motivator) or maybe I had (just maybe) simply gotten tired of saying "I'll start again tomorrow"
I suppose you wouldn't know that as of July last year I went through a major health kick.
Unfortunately, over the last few months, I've had a relapse (5kg of relapse actually)
But not any more.
With a combination of Tumblr, blogs, recipes and my favourite part (monthly challenges from Blogilates)
I feel like a newly rebirthed fitness baby.
I'm ready to rock and roll.
Sunday I did a big work out (one of Michelle Bridge's cardio DVDs) and I made good dietry decisions all day (minus probably the 3 little choc eggs & hazelnut coffee - hey a girl can treat herself) :P
Oh, and I researched a whole bunch of easy peasy breakfast recipes.
I'm going to do the same with lunch & dinner & literally stick them on the fridge.
No excuses!

ONLINE FIND:

Also: I just found all these cute tees from urban outfitters
I swear I might have to fork out for a couple of them.
They are just too cute. Check out the Lisa Frank kitten tank - I might have to snap that up before it goes out of stock - I just know that it will

kitty swirl muscle tee // keep it surreal muscle tee // led zeppelin tee // smiley face muscle tee // yin-yang muscle tee // lisa frank kitten tank //

I think I'm revisiting me weird retro hippie phase.
I don't even mind. :)
It does however make me want to drop acid in the 70's - oh, how times have changed.

Peace out lovers xox

52 List Monday

Hello there!

So I know I am jumping on the bandwagon a bit late but I don't even care.
I am going to dub Mondays - "52 List Monday" - original right.
So if this is your first time reading about this list business and you are sitting there wondering what the hell I'm talking about, fear no more...

It's pretty much a weekly list writing initiative started by awesome blogger Morea Seal (click the link to go straight to her 52 List Page)
As a big fan of lists in general, I thought this was perfect for me! Rather than spam everyone with 15 weeks of lists I'd rather just start from this one & go from there. At the end of the road I will just go back and do the ones I've missed (woohoo prolonged listing pleasure)

Any-who, back to all things listing, I'm sure you guys are familiar with the Listverse books? No? Check 'em out!

Without further ado, here is my first list... *drum roll*

"Beware of "everybody says"

- We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

“The world breaks everyone & afterward many are strong in the broken places”

 – Ernest Hemingway

“He tunneled into stories where weak men changed into strong half-animals or used eye beams or magic hammer to power through steel or climb up the sides of skyscrapers. He was the Hulk when angry and Spidey the rest of the time. Whenever he felt his heart hurt he turned into something stronger than a little boy and he grew up this way. A heart that flashed from heart to stone, heart to stone”
- The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

“Love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe”
- Unknown

“The world was not meant to be a prison in which man awaits his execution”
- John F. Kennedy

“I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night”
- The Old Astronomer by Sarah Williams

“I was born with an enormous need for affection & a terrible need to give it”
- Audrey Hepburn

“When there is nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire”
- Your Ex-Lover Is Dead by Stars

"We accept the love we think we deserve"
- The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Steven Chbosky

"I feel infinite"
- The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Steven Chbosky

"This moment will just be another story someday"
- The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Steven Chbosky

"In life, as in art, some endings are bittersweet. Especially when it comes to love. Sometimes fate throws two lovers together only to rip them apart. Sometimes the hero finally makes the right choice but the timing is all wrong. And as they say, timing is everything"
- Gossip Girl

"You know, it's kind of funny how you can find meanings from things you wouldn't think to look at. Like on a TV Show - the truth always comes out, it's one of the fundamental rules of time. And when it comes out it can set you free, or end everything you've fought so hard for. Another way truth comes out - when you don't even meant it to, or when, without saying a word, it's still heard loud and clear. But the worst thing the truth can do? Is when you finally tell it, it doesn't set you free, but it locks you away forever"
- Gossip Girl

"Shoulder pads may come and go but a BFF is forever. Because even when you're not sure where you're headed, it helps to know that you're not going there alone. No one has all the answers. Sometimes, the best we can do is just apologise and let the past be the past. Other times, we need to look to the future and know that even though we think we've seen it all, life can still surprise us and we can still surprise ourselves"
- Gossip Girl

"All cats can see futures and see echoes of the past. We can watch the passage of creatures from the infinity of now, from all the worlds like ours, only fractionally different. And we follow them with our eyes, ghost things and the humans see nothing."
- Sandman #18 "A Dream of A Thousand Cats" by Neil Gaiman

"People who hate cats will come back as mice in their next life"
- Faith Resnick

"Music is the art which is most nigh to tears and memory"
- Oscar Wilde

"I am patient with stupid but not with those who are proud of it"
- Edith Sitwell

post secret adventures

So last night was a night I'd been looking forward to for a number of months. After years of staring longingly at all the US and Uk tour dates, Frank Warren finally hit the shores of Western Australia.

the view of the stage from my seat

If you don't know who Frank Warren is, he is the creator of Post Secret, a global art project where strangers anonymously send their secrets/confessions on postcards with the chance of them getting published on the website every Sunday or in one of the many books.

the tickets
I bought a ticket for my boyfriend and I and I did really enjoy his presentation. It was hard for me (being a long time fan) since quite a few stories he spun, I had heard before. They were all still very enjoyable, I was just a tad disappointed by the lack of unseen content. I think I expected one of the awesome videos they put together sometimes.

Perth's Astor Theatre, venue for Post Secret

It did feel very short. Time flew by... But as my boyfriend pointed out, he probably did that on purpose so he'd have more time to meet and greet his fans.

I said before, I'm a long time fan and I am only missing one of the books. I had it in my head that I would buy my last missing book there and get it signed. Instead they only had the first two books available.
I was told that was because of the Australian distribution. However, I wasn't missing out on a book signing, so I bought a second copy just so I could line up to meet Frank after the show
.
my collection of Post Secret books

The lady in front of me was gorgeous and carried two of the early editions (which I have at home) and I watched as she chatted openly, calmly to Frank. He signed both her books and asked her what her favourite part of the evening was. I heard her say "how long she'd been waiting to see the show" and all I could think was "damn, that's my line. I've been waiting 5 years"

When I got to the table, he smiled signed and stamped my book and I knew I should have just left but instead I just blabbered on about how I'd watched the tour go all over America and how i was so broke at the time but i bought tickets cause I couldn't bear to miss the show and he sat there genuinely listening to me. I told him to enjoy Australia. At his end of the line on his tour *facepalm*
I may as well have told him to enjoy Perth airport.

my copy of "My Secret" signed & stamped by Frank

I got to that table and felt like a babbling, frumpy fan who just picked up her first secret book on her way in. I had found the audience confessions awkward. I've decided I find it easier to relate to the anonymous stranger than to the hipster standing at a microphone announcing their issues. Either way, I love Post Secret. I've recommended it to all my friends.
When Frank comes back, I'll probably still come back to see the show.

Check out postsecret.com and hit up Amazon for the books

a quick note to say

I promise you I will put more effort into this blog.
I want it to succeed, I just found an absolutely wonderful blog made by a lady named Lara who is a few years younger than me. Eep.
I've grown used to the late twenty-something women that frequent my bloglovin' dashboard and have flawless blogs (I call these ladies working blogging
I do have my reasons, I recently moved house (last month) but I've been having horrible internet troubles for the last few years of my life. I am so over it.

I have the internet man coming out tomorrow to have a look at the connection (or lack there of)
By the end of the weekend I want to apply for university (a huge thing on it's own) but pretty much the bottom line is that I have been writing all my blog posts from my computer at work.
So, not only am I having to endure this sort of stealth blogging, it's stressful, I work in a corner desk, I have people constantly walking past me, behind me. Urgh.
I'd love to be able to go home, go online, make pretty and interesting posts and schedule them for the next day.
So I'm hoping that anyone who stumbles onto my blog knows that it is a big work in progress, please don't write me off just yet ;) ... pretty please?

a home shopping list to make my bank account cry

I wish my weekend had been worthy of a blog post but sadly, I spent a lot of time doing housework.
We still have a whole room of boxes that needed to be sorted out & now I am pleased to say, all I am waiting for now is to have enough money to go out & buy the rest of the furniture & storage solutions.
I am admittedly, super excited for everything to have a place!

My Shopping List

  • Lack Coffee Table $89 - going to use this to house my TV & Playstation, it has inbuilt magazine storage & space underneath for...
  • Kassett CD Boxes with Lids $6.95 per 2pk - to store my massive CD collection & Kassett Magazine Holders $8.95 per 2pk - hopefully I won't be storing too many magazines underneath here, they will mostly be Rolling Stone & some miscellaneous magazines (all my regulars I seek to destroy & file in my...
  • Soho 2 Drawer Filing Cabinet $89 - it's a bit grey & dreary but it's too hard painting powder coated steel so I might just pretty it up with some cute magnets
  • Expedit 4 Cube Shelving Unit $49 - for all my odds & ends. I will definitely invest in some of the inserts such as the Expedit 2 Drawer Insert $35 & the Drona Box that will no doubt be filled with things that seem to be homeless
  • Expedit Large Cube Shelving Unit $249 - the most exxy & important piece of furniture as it will be holding all of my collectables (this is a long time coming & just SO exciting for me) & maybe even my comics & graphic novels if I can find a way to fit them in. I'm definitely going to add a couple of the Glass Door Inserts $25 for my smaller collectables, plus the double shelving will save room!
  • Vardo Bed Storage $29.95 - my bed has room for 4 of them but I will start off with 3, one for my massive (soon-to-be vaccuum sealed tee shirt collection), one for my plushes I can't bear to part with (I swear there isn't many left but I still need somewhere to put them) & lastly, one for my general miscellaneous awesomeness (think a combination of plastic lobsters, rubber chickens, magnifying glasses, play doh... thinks which I love & appreciate but needs a home).
Things I Still Want/Need but Am Still Deciding On
  • I still haven't decided on a DVD holder (by DVD's I mean TV series since all my DVDs are mixed in with the massive collection in the lounge room) that fits the amount I have.
  • I haven't decided on an art trolley either since I have a big mix of craft stuff and scrapbooking (paper takes up a lot of room) I'm still brainstorming the best way to combine the too without taking too much space.
  • We haven't found the right TV unit for the lounge room either which will become more important next few weeks as we will attempt to bring our awesome brand spanking new 3D TV home for the first time.
  • We still need to get a dining table & a small "conversation" setting for the backyard.
  • I want a lawn flamingo for the garden too & some cute planters for my future herb garden.
  • Eventually I will need a new desk if I get into Uni, I will need somewhere I can spread out books for study but for now, the tiny little square desk will have to do.
So this is my shopping list, now back to budgeting....

wrestlemania 29 wrap up

Wrestling is a special kind of sport amongst my group of friends... or at least to a handful of them, who just happen to be my closest friends.
My best friend D says it's their equivalent of a soap opera (which makes total sense right?) aka "man drama". The perfect combination of fighting + acting + sport + scantily clad women = an entertaining show, right?

Every year for all the major events / pay-per-views, a bunch of us get together to eat, drink & be merry... and to watch the excitement unfold and I have to admit, I've become sort of a fan myself.
It was hard not to be sucked into it when you are constantly trying to figure out what everyone is going on about or who they are talking about and why they were deemed worth of an hour-long drunken debates (yes, this really happens)

This year was particularly special as two of the main wrestling fans in our group flew all the way to the U.S of A to watch Wrestlemania live in New York / New Jersey. ]
It was pretty much their life-long dream together and it was awesome seeing them on TV.
The rest of us had to get up at 6am AWST to watch it live while it was going on at night time over in America, which still didn't stop my boyfriend from getting onto the rum before we even had breakfast... now that's commitment to a sport. Baha.

Wrestlemania 29 Promo Poster

My Play-By-Play

  • Pre-Show: the Miz defeated Wade Barrett even though he is a mega-douche
  • The Shield defeated Sheamus, Randy Orton & Bigshow because the Shield are totally badass! Seth Rollins has absolutely no fear & just goes with his instincts which makes for extremely entertaining wrestling (aka Seth launching himself full speed out of the ring)
  • Mark Henry defeated Ryback even though Ryback impressed/scared the hell out everyone (especially Mark Henry) by lifting his 187kg ass over his head! I'm not a fan of Ryback, his face creeps me out, but he definitely deserved to win.
  • Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan & Kane) beat Dolph Ziggler & Big.E Langston which made me sad because I like when Dolph wins so AJ is happy but Team Hell No put on a hell of a match, the best in a long time - so I can't even hold it against them.
  • Fandango beat Chris Jericho in his debut at Wrestlemania. I don't even know how I feel about this, but his entrance made me want to burn things, and not in a good way.
  • Alberto Del Rio defeated Jack Swagger which is unsurprising - even heels have to know they limit their chances of winning after pulling the immigration card.
  • The Undertaker defeated CM Punk which caused much controversy among fans. Both had a title streak to keep in place but Undertaker managers to hold on to his 21-0 Wrestlemania streak. Punk's chip on his shoulder was no match for Taker's fire in his belly fuelled by Punk's disrespect to his recently deceased long-time manager Paul Bearer. This made it a personal & epic match and I can say is, I can't wait for the rematch! Poor CM, guess sometime's it hard being "The Best In The World"
  •  Triple H defeated Brock Lesnar which I was so happy with, it felt like it could have gone either way the entire time, though Bork Laser freaks me out, he reminds me of Foul Phil from Garbage Pail Kids.
  • John Cena defeated the Rock, another controversial match which allows Rock to leave WWE for however long he feels like it so he can play with his millions, take a holiday, shoot some movies, do some cooking, whatever Rock likes to do and return at some point for another show down. Cena's win also cemented his status as a self-righteous mega-douche. "Rise Above Cena" - can I get that on a shirt?!

AJ Lee at the MetLife Stadium

Anyone who is thinking "oh wrestling is so fake, lame or whatever" - I agree with you!
It's not UFC, it is fake, it is set up but it's also a hell of a lot of fun.
I did an performance class at University once which taught us out to stage fight, let me tell you it isn't easy!
So give mad props to all the pro wrestlers who know how to put on a convincing show
People tend to take it too seriously when all it is is quality entertainment.
Also, I have developed a mad fangirl crush on AJ Lee... so there really is no turning back for me now.

Check out this awesome IGN interview with AJ Lee to get a better understanding of why I heart her so much: LINK

warm fuzzies #1: cats & the sea services

Every so often, something comes up that restores my faith in humanity
From now on, I want to share these things on this blog.
Today, it was these photos from "Cats & the Sea Service" and just how adorable are they!?
It makes me just that little bit happier knowing there is proof that even the hardest manly men of war can have soft spots for widdle biddle kitties :)

"Accepting her fate as an orphan of war, 'Miss Hap' a two-week old Korean kitten chows down on canned milk, piped to her by medicine dropper with the help of Marine Sergeant Frank Praytor ... The Marine adopted the kitten after its mother was killed by a mortar barrage near Bunker Hill. The name, Miss Hap, Sergeant Praytor explained, was given to the kitten 'because she was born at the wrong place at the wrong time'." Korea, ca 1953

weekends are for the warriors

Hello there! This is my first post on my brand new blog, how super exciting.

What I am really excited for is May.
May is going to be my month.
The fruits of my laborious April.

  • I will have applied for university & spend some moolah creating a working space for me (read: buying a desk from IKEA)
  • I will have a brand spanking new phone & a brand spanking new iPad to boot
  •  I will be a few more hours closer to getting my license on my log book
  • I will have finished setting up my room & the house I will have devised a serious savings plan for my future travel/house/car

My wishlist is never ending It’s kind of hard to even look at these days since my rent is so high & my pay is so low, something’s gotta give.
So instead I will look to this weekend:

Friday Night: a night of drinking games with my friends dubbed “drinks & games night” – original right?
Saturday Day: checking out potential bars for my 21st birthday celebrations in August
Saturday Night: a night out on the town to celebrate my friend Cameron’s 23rd birthday
Sunday Day: Rock climbing & cocktails
Sunday Night: a night of relaxed partying with my closest friends in preparation for..
Monday Day: an early rise to watch Wrestlemania Live on TV
Monday Night: Jurassic Park in 3D

I’m going to make a proper effort to take as many pictures as I can & post them I’ll probably make a post dedicated to the drinking games we get up to, always good to have a reference!
Sometimes I really love my life & other times I can’t seemed to wade through the fog (read: bullshit) to see what a big pretty picture I have Stayed tuned for updates.
I’m looking forward to sharing my life with anyone unlucky enough to stumble onto my blog (kidding *cough*)
